As expected, Honolulu City Councilwoman Kymberly Pine is running for mayor of Honolulu in 2020.
Pine made the announcement via press release Monday.
“I am running for mayor to change the way Honolulu is led,” she said. “There are things happening right now that are forcing families to leave our beautiful home. New leadership is necessary to shift Honolulu’s path. Change starts now.”

Pine will complete her second and final four-year term as a member of the council from District 1 (portions of Ewa Villages and Ewa Beach, Kapolei, Makakilo, Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, Ko Olina, Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae, Makaha, Keaau and Makua).
She is a former state legislator and the granddaughter of Filipino immigrants who came to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations, according to the release.
Here is part of her platform:
- increase trust and transparency at Honolulu Hale;
- add truly affordable housing units with creative solutions;
- reduce homelessness with housing, effective services and job training so our houseless populations have the tools they need to thrive; and
- improve quality of life by prioritizing essentials like roads that are fixed, beaches that are clean and parks that are maintained and safe.
Businessman and sports fan Keith Amemiya previously announced his campaign for mayor. The race is expected to attract other candidates as well.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell is completing his final term of mayor next year.
