(AP) — A Wakiki shopping center sent a false alert to merchants informing them of an active shooter.

International Market Place in Waikiki says in a statement the message was inadvertently sent Wednesday during a routine test of an emergency communication system.

Magnolia Ice Cream & Treats employee Ronan Andal says it was a little scary to receive an automated phone call warning of an active shooter. He says the call didn’t provide any information about what to do so “we just kept doing our thing.”

He says another automated call came about 20 minutes later saying it was a false alarm.

Honolulu police sent an alert saying there’s no active shooter threat. Police say a text was mistakenly sent to businesses.

Last year residents across Hawaii were mistakenly sent an alert warning of an incoming ballistic missile.
